Fracture mechanics is an essential tool for engineers in a number of different engineering disciplines. For example, an engineer in a metals- or plastics-dependent industry might use fracture mechanics to evaluate and characterize materials, while another in aerospace or construction might use fracture mechanics-based methods for product design and service life-time estimation.   Attempt to deduce stress intensity factors directly using energy methods or path independent integrals 3. Certain incremental path-independent integrals, of relevance in the mechanics of fracture of elastic-plastic materials described by a classical flow theory of plasticity, are presented.

The topic of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics is reviewed. The suitability of the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) and the J-integral as elastic-plastic failure parameters that characterise. Abstract. Deformation theory of plasticity is applied to generalise fracture mechanics concepts to nonlinear material behaviour.

Special emphasis is put on the J-integral as energy release rate and crack-tip intensity parameter in perfect analogy to linear-elastic fracture : Wolfgang Brocks. *Cracks and Fracture will be a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students in engineering fields related to the sciences of mechanics and materials, in geophysics and in mathematical physics.

Professor K.B. Broberg is a leading figure in the world of fracture mechanics. Cracks and Fracture is an excellent contribution to the field.4/4(1). *Cracks and Fracture will be a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students in engineering fields related to the sciences of mechanics and materials, in geophysics and in mathematical physics.

Professor K.B. Broberg is a leading figure in the world of fracture mechanics. Cracks and Fracture is an excellent contribution to the field.4/5(1). The linear elastic fracture mechanics can be formulated from the concept of a characteristic crack tip field, which is directly correlated with a well defined fracture initiation process.

This formulation is extended to the elastic-plastic fracture mechanics. The stresses and strains at a crack tip are in a complicated three-dimensional state.

In all these problems fracture mechanics plays a major role for the prediction of failure and safe design of materials and structures.

These new challenges motivated the author to proceed with the second edition of the book. It was clear that if fracture mechanics as a discipline were to be applied successfully in these applications, the analytical theory had to be extended to include fracture under elastic–plastic and fully-plastic conditions. Chapter 3 develops general basic concepts and relations in crack mechanics, such as path independent integrals, stress intensity factors and energy flux into the crack edge region. Chapters deal with elastostatic cracks, stationary or slowly moving elastic-plastic cracks, elastodynamic crack mechanics and elastoplastic aspects of fracture.
